My chosen Genre

Which genre have you chosen and why?

For my A-level music magazine I have chosen the genre Pop. The reason being in producing and designing this particular genre for a magazine, it that it has a large mainstream scale as an audience that could relate to this specific magazine gathering a sense of belonging and security which is my individual main aim in constructing the magazine to appeal to the target audience which the use of colour, language and layout. I personally feel that I could gather a lot from creating a magazine based on Pop.  This is the opportunity to express my creative nature and a chance to adapt the magazine bringing in a sense of my own personal style to the magazine however still remaining to keep a professional and specialised approach.

What seem to be the conventions of this genre? Who is the target audience?

The majority of magazine weather or not that are based on the same genre have common conventions that produce the layout of a magazine. They consist of: Masthead, barcode, price, date, main image and sell lines. However there is one thing that differs throughout each magazine which is as follows the main colour scheme of a magazine. The colour scheme needs to be appropriate in attracting the right target audience for the chosen genre of the magazine. For example

Pop magazines with the chosen colour scheme of dark, dull colours such as black and red wouldn’t help to attract the correct buyers as they want to see bright vibrant colours throughout the magazine. The colours chosen often imitate the music they are promoting. As from an audience’s perspective you want a magazine to stand out to the public’s eye in order for them to purchase the magazine. Many Pop magazines incorporate the use of colloquial language .The function of this convention is to appeal to the younger audiences making them attracted and engaged towards the magazine.

The main target audience I have chosen to appeal my magazine to the age group between 13-24. The magazine will be aimed at anyone who is appealed be the mainstream chart style of music such as artist: Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars. The audience is mainly female dominant however I will ensure to include aspects that attract males. That way I have successfully appealed to a large target audience.

Who are the main publishers for magazine of this genre?

The publishers and publishing houses differ from each magazine and their varied genres. For instance “Billboard” magazine is published by Prometheus Global Media, a diversified company with leading assets in the media and entertainment area, with the circulation of 44,627. Whereas Blender is published by Dennis publishing with a circulation of 35,237. For my own magazine is would likely chose Prometheus Global Media and they have a slightly higher circulation rate even though that printed magazine sales are declining.
